S.Yizhar (Yizhar Smilanksy) was born in Rehovot, Israel in 1916 to a family of Russian immigrants. He fought in the 1948 War of Independence, served in the Knesset (Israeli Parliament), was a professor of education at Hebrew University, Jerusalem, and of Hebrew literature at Tel Aviv University. He won many prizes for literature in his lifetime, and other publications include the novels ‘Preliminaries’ and ‘Days of Ziklag’
